Well, while Gov. Richardson is off saving the world from nuclear weapons, back in America we’re talking about Al Gore. You can’t throw a rock without hitting the TNR article lauding Gore as the only way to avoid nominating Hillary Clinton in 2008.
I like Al Gore. I thought he was a great candidate, a great Vice President, and I think a Gore presidency would have spared us the miserable failure of the Iraq war. But let’s be clear. The man isn’t running for President. First of all, there’s the fact that he has already said so:
“I have absolutely no plans and no expectations of ever being a candidate again,” Gore told reporters after giving a speech at an economic forum in Sweden.
That was five days ago. Take the hint, TNR.
The problem is that TNR’s claim is non-falsifiable; they claim that the smart strategy for Gore would be to “lie low” while the public tuckers itself out on the existing Dem field. So any time anyone points them to a remark by the one above, insistent Gore backers will just say that’s “laying low.” Sorry, no.
Also, a Gore/Clinton primary would just be weird. I mean, talk about your 90’s flashbacks. “Hey, remember when we were in the White House together?” Although I’ll tell you what would be good, is Clinton/Gore ‘08. Slogan: “One more time!”
